The Balearic Islands have surpassed its historical maximum of human pressure on August 7. On that day, 2,079,541 people, between residents and tourists, converged on the archipelago, according to data published Wednesday by the Institute of Statistics of the islands (Ibestat).. According to the latest data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), the Community had 1 ,238,812 registered inhabitants on July 1. Assuming a maximum occupation the de facto population, the total number of people registered on August 7 has exceeded the stable residents by 67.8%. That means that 2 out of every 5 people present in the archipelago on that day were non-residents. The August average actual population of 2,018,506 people is also the highest figure since the human pressure indicator has been recorded, the same as the daily minimum of 1,878,282 people, the highest ever recorded. If we compare the maximum value of load in a day in 2023, which amounted to 2,041,559 people, with the 2,079,541 of this year, the year-on-year increase amounts to 1.9%. At the same time, the minimum recorded this year between January and August is 1,216,864 persons living on the islands on the same day, a number 2.1% higher than the same figure for 2023, when it was 1,192,320 persons.
Ibiza and Formentera
As for Ibiza, in August the maximum number of people who have been on the island in one day was 309,318, data counted on the 16th of last month. This is a year-on-year decrease compared to 320,859 in August 2023. July had already marked a decrease over the same month last year. The minimum in August was recorded on the last day of the month, when there were 261,477 people on the island between residents and tourists. Usually, during the summer months, with the arrival of tourists, the actual population of Ibiza doubles the number of residents (about 163,000 according to data from 2024). The absolute record for the month of August and for the island is 336,903 people who were in Ibiza in August 2017. It is worth remembering that only since 2016 Ibestat began to separate the data for Ibiza and Formentera. In Formentera, in August there was a population peak of 34,499, registered on the 9th of the month. This is the lowest peak since August 2020, the year of the COVID-19 pandemic. The minimum in Formentera also occurred on August 31, with 27,411 people.
