The flow of irregular immigration in Balearic waters has intensified this Saturday, closing the day with the rescue of a new skiff to the south of Formenterawhich brings to 39 the number of people arriving on the island in a single day. According to the Government Delegation, the last boat was intercepted at 20:08 hours. It had 13 people on board, all of Maghrebi origin, in an apparently good state of health. Rescue operations began in the early hours of Saturday, with two more boats located in the waters of Formentera, totaling three boats that brought 39 people to the island throughout the day. This phenomenon of arrivals in the smallest of the Pitiusas has raised alarms about the growing migratory pressure in the region.
Sustained migration in the Balearic Islands
Not only Formentera has seen an increase in the arrival of boats; on the coast of Cabrera three additional pateras were also intercepted, carrying a total of 60 Maghrebi immigrants, bringing the overall number of people rescued to 99 in the last 24 hours in the Balearic Islands. This new increase of maritime arrivals follows the trend of the last weeks, in which Salvamento MarĆtimo and the security forces have intensified their surveillance and rescue work due to the high frequency of pateras in the area.
