The Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has completed the construction of the Ibiza Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), an essential infrastructure to improve the management and treatment of wastewater on the island. This project, which complies with the quality standards of European Union Directive 91/271/EC, seeks to ensure that discharges into the sea meet environmental requirements, especially during the high season, when the flow of wastewater increases significantly due to the high influx of tourists.
Improved water treatment and reduction of environmental impacts
The new Ibiza WWTP is designed to serve a population of 96,748 equivalent inhabitants. With this infrastructure, the treatment process will be optimized, reducing the generation of gases and bad odors and minimizing the impact on the marine environment. In addition, this improvement will have a positive impact on the quality of nearby coastal waters, protecting bathing areas, marine habitats and fishing areas near the discharge point.
Support from European funds
The project has been co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) 2014-2020 as part of Spain’s Pluri-regional Operational Program (POPE), aimed at environmental conservation. With the WWTP fully operational, Ibiza is expected to manage its wastewater more efficiently, thus promoting the sustainability of its resources and tourism that is more respectful of the island’s natural environment.
