The plenary session of the Ibiza Council has initially approved the transfer of the section of the first ring road EI-10, between kilometer point 0+000 and 0+760, to the City Council of Ibiza, with the aim of facilitating its remodeling. As explained by the vice-president and councilor of Road Infrastructures, Mariano Juan, this project seeks to “sew up the city”, allowing a better integration of this space within the urban environment.
An urban transformation policy
The councilor stressed that this initiative is part of a broader policy of the Consell to transfer stretches of road network that cross urban centers. Recent examples include the crossings of Sant Jordi, Ca na Negreta, and Sant Carles, and the same will soon be carried out in Corona, following a formal request from the Town Council. Juan also stressed the need for town councils to lead these transformations, turning roads into “urban meshes” that improve the livability of localities. “We have been talking for too long about the transformation that this road needs. Now it will be up to the city councils to implement the existing project or adapt it to their needs,” he said.
Guaranteed financing
The vice president of the Consell reaffirmed the commitment of the insular institution to finance the necessary investments in this reform, as has been done in other projects underway, such as Ca na Negreta and Sant Jordi. However, he made it clear that it will be the Ibiza Town Hall who will define the final design of this remodeling, according to the needs of the municipality. The initial approval of the agreement will be subject to a public exhibition period of one month in the BOIB and on the notice board of the Consell, before its final ratification.
