The passage of a cold front over the Balearic Islands will activate an orange warning in Ibiza and Formentera from tonight, as reported by the State Agency of Meteorology (AEMET). Forecasts indicate that wind gusts could reach 80 km / h and generate waves of up to three meters, which has led to the activation of precautionary measures throughout the archipelago. The spokesman for AEMET in the Balearic Islands, Miquel Gili, has detailed that the climate change will begin to be noticed from Thursday afternoon, when the wind, initially from southwest direction, will gradually gain strength. During the early hours of Friday, the gusts will be especially intense, affecting both the sea and the most exposed areas of the islands.
Lower temperatures: winter sets in on the islands
In addition to the wind, the cold front will cause a significant drop in temperatures. According to forecasts, Friday will record lows of between 3 and 9 degrees and highs that will not exceed 16 degrees. This drop will mean a fall of between 4 and 5 degrees compared to the current values, consolidating the arrival of a wintry atmosphere. During the weekend, the thermometer will continue to fall, especially in the early morning, with minimum temperatures that could reach 0 degrees in high areas such as the Serra de Tramuntana. However, a slight recovery of the temperatures is expected on Sunday, accompanied by slightly cloudy skies.
Recommendations for the orange warning
The AEMET recalls the importance of taking precautionary measures during these adverse weather episodes. It is recommended to avoid outdoor activities in exposed areas, such as coasts and mountainous areas, to secure objects that can be dragged by the wind and to keep informed through official channels to know the evolution of the phenomenon. For maritime traffic, waves of up to three meters expected in Ibiza and Formentera during the orange warning pose an additional challenge. Therefore, sailors are advised to exercise extreme caution or avoid going out to sea for the next few hours.
