As already announced in the Balearic Islands, this Christmas has come with sharp increases in the prices of typical foods throughout Spain. According to recent statistics shared by the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU), these traditional meals have increased on average its price by 12.3% nationwide compared to what they had at the end of November. An increase higher than the 10 % they have warned in the Balearic Islands.
In relation to last year’s records, prices have risen by 6.8%, a much higher increase than that seen in the last two years and which is close to that of 2021. The organization has been analyzing since 2015 the price of 16 typically Christmas foods in high demand at this time of year, in municipal markets, supermarkets and hypermarkets in large urban centers of the country.
The largest and smallest increases
In a statement, the OCU has pointed out that, as in previous years, the largest increases are centered on seafood and fish, while in meats they are more moderate; in addition, fruits and vegetables are the only ones that fall or moderate their price. The products that make up this Christmas basket are suckling lamb for roasting by quarters, round of veal, pork shoulder, turkey, Iberian ham, red cabbage, pineapple, pomegranate, sea bream, aquaculture sea bass, cut hake, elvers, boiled prawns, Galician barnacles, clams and oysters. According to the results of the third wave of the study and in relation to the first price survey of November 25, 13 products have risen in price compared to only 3 that have fallen. Those that have risen the most are:
- Barnacles (78.4%)
- Clams (53.1%)
- Hake, cut (32.8%)
- Eel (13.9 %)
