Aesia, based in A Coruña, will assume full powers of supervision and sanctioning of prohibited AI practices as of August 2, 2025.
The Spanish Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence (Aesia) will start its inspections on February 2, 2025, and from August 2 it will assume full sanctioning and governance powers in accordance with EU regulations. This has been informed by the Government in a parliamentary response registered in Congress.
Aesia: structure, functions and headquarters
Aesia, attached to the Ministry for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service, will be located in the La Terraza Building in A Coruña, which will be remodeled to house this key agency in the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI). The agency is expected to have 80 employees by 2025, and has already incorporated its management team, including director Ignasi Belda. Until it has its own budget, Aesia will be funded by the resources of the Ministry, currently headed by Óscar López. Currently, the agency provides outreach and advocacy services for sustainable AI development, in addition to advancing its oversight and regulatory capabilities.
Industry support and AI regulation
The government has indicated that Aesia will implement measures to support SMEs and startups in the AI sector, facilitating their access to isolated regulatory environments and promoting training and awareness activities. Specialized communication channels will also be created to resolve doubts and provide advice on the AI Regulation.
