The City Council of Sant Josep has activated the legionella protocol in all its facilities after detecting a possible outbreak of the bacteria in the municipal sports center of Sant Jordi.
However, despite this alert and the preventive measures taken, the facility is still open to the public, which has generated criticism and concern among neighbors and users.
An outbreak under suspicion and preventive measures
As reported by the consistory in a press release, periodic checks carried out at the Can Guerxo sports center have detected what, in principle, appears to be a false positive for legionella.
However, as a precautionary measure, showers in sports facilities have been closed, municipal centers -including schools- have been disinfected using chlorination systems and the filters of faucets and shower sprayers have been replaced.
The City Council has assured that it is waiting to receive the laboratory results, and if these confirm that there is no presence of the bacteria, “normality will be resumed as soon as possible”.
They have also asked the public to understand the inconvenience caused by these actions, insisting that the established safety protocols are being followed.
Complaints of lack of transparency
However, the PSOE of Sant Josep has criticized the management of this situation and has denounced the lack of transparency on the part of the government team. According to the socialist spokeswoman, Pilar Ribas, the problem is not limited to the Can Guerxo sports center, but possible cases have also been detected in other municipal centers, including schools and the Sant Jordi soccer field.
“The PP government team in Sant Josep has hidden this information from the population of the municipality, and we do not understand for what purpose,” said Ribas. Given this situation, the socialist group has registered a formal request to demand explanations and clarifications on the real extent of the outbreak and the measures taken.
