The Balearic Government has reiterated its commitment to the fight against the irregular exploitation of water in Ibiza. water in Ibiza and is working on measures to sanction those who operate outside the regulations.
This was stated by the Councilor for the Sea and Water Cycle, Juan Manuel Lafuente, in a meeting with the association Unió per la Defensa de l’Aigua, in which the main concerns about water management on the island were discussed.
Control and sanctions for illegal wells
One of the key points of the meeting was the problem of illegal wells, which continue to affect the aquifers of Ibiza. Lafuente pointed out that the Government will intensify the supervision of these extractions through the progressive installation of digital meters that will allow a more exhaustive control of consumption.
“We cannot allow these practices to continue putting everyone’s water at risk. The regulations must be complied with and whoever exceeds the limits will be controlled,” said the councilor, making it clear that farms operating outside the law will be subject to sanctions.
Investments to improve water management
The president of the Consell de Ibiza, Vicent Marí, stressed that water management is “an issue of utmost concern that affects us all”. In this sense, he highlighted the investments being made by the municipalities in collaboration with the Consell to improve the distribution of rainwater in the municipalities and reduce leaks in the supply network.
In addition, Lafuente has insisted on the “unprecedented investment” that the Government is allocating to the water cycle in Ibiza, with the aim of ensuring a sustainable supply and reduce pressure on aquifers. “We are aware that the island is experiencing a critical situation and we are working to offer solutions that allow for a more sustainable future in water management,” he said.
A structural problem in Ibiza
The overexploitation of aquifers is one of the main environmental problems of Ibiza, aggravated by the proliferation of illegal wells and the lack of control in the use of water. The association Unió per la Defensa de l’Aigua has conveyed its concerns to the Govern, demanding concrete actions to ensure that the island’s water resources are no longer threatened.
In addition to penalties for irregular farms, the Government is committed to the modernization of infrastructures and the optimization of the distribution network to minimize losses.
