Silence-breaking testimonies
The first speaker was Carmen, who recalled how 45 years ago she separated after suffering physical and psychological violence “at a time without resources or social support”. Her story provided a context for the evolution of victim care.
For her part, Lorena recounted that she lived “a terrifying day by day that you think will end, but it doesn’t end” before breaking up with her aggressor a decade ago. She stressed that many women need support to take the step, because the violence is compounded by “the shame of separating from the one you once loved.”
This colloquium was part of the program of activities organized by the PSOE of Ibiza on the occasion of the 25N, an event that the party dedicated this year to raise awareness of vicarious violence and to strengthen the dissemination of resources for victim care.
Focus on vicarious violence
The symposium paid special attention to vicarious violence, defined as violence in which the aggressor uses the children to harm the mother. During the event, it was explained that this type of violence is “so cruel that sometimes it is difficult to even give it a name”.
Data from the Government Delegation against Gender Violence show the seriousness of the phenomenon: 65 minors have been murdered since 2013 in Spain in this context. Each of these cases leaves a surviving mother facing permanent harm.
Strengthening the protection of minors
The meeting defended the need to strengthen child protection protocols and improve institutional coordination to prevent minors from becoming instruments of emotional coercion. It was recalled that the future specific law on vicarious violence is still being processed.
Upcoming activities for 25N
The program will continue on Friday, November 28 at 7:00 p.m. with the talk “The treatment of the victim in the UFAM”, given by Deputy Commissioner Jimena López, who will analyze the police protocols for the care of victims of gender violence.
The cycle will close on Saturday, November 29 with the screening of the film “I am Nevenka” at the socialist headquarters of Sant Josep, followed by a debate on the validity of the case and its impact on the fight against gender violence.
