The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has activated for this Tuesday, December 24, a warning for strong waves on the coasts of Ibiza and Formentera. The islands, along with other points in the northwest of the country, face adverse sea conditions on a day marked by weather instability. The warning issued for Ibiza and Formentera emphasizes the danger of waves, which could exceed two meters in some areas, driven by strong north winds. Although the islands do not reach the orange level, as in Menorca or Gerona, the yellow level warning reflects the risk for maritime activities and near the coast.
In parallel, the rest of the Balearic Islands is also under weather watch: Menorca has been included in orange level for waves and wind, while Mallorca faces high intensity waves on its north coast.
The rest of the country is not spared either
The influence of a flow of humid air from the north will impact much of the country. While in Ibiza and Formentera the sea will be the protagonist, in other regions snowfall is expected in the Pyrenees, rain in the eastern Cantabrian and showers in Menorca. As for temperatures, AEMET forecasts a rise in the maximum temperatures in much of the Peninsula and the Canary Islands, although without major changes in the Balearic Islands. The minimum, however, will continue to record light frosts in inland mountain spots.
Recommended precautions
Local authorities have asked to exercise extreme caution in coastal areas and to avoid maritime activities until the situation improves. AEMET forecasts that winds will gradually diminish towards the afternoon, but adverse conditions could remain for much of the day.
