The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and the Emergency Service have warned of the arrival of a new squall this Saturday, which will bring heavy and persistent rains to the entire Balearic archipelago. After the passage of a fast front that flooded the south of Ibiza during Thursday morning -without causing serious incidents-, the situation will tend to stabilize throughout the day and during Friday. However, the forecast points to a new upturn in weather instability during the weekend.
Analysis and forecasts
The Technical Advisory Committee of the METEOBAL Plan met Thursday to assess the evolution of the storm and forecasts for the coming days. According to the AEMET, “the front forecast for today Thursday has already passed”, so only occasional and insignificant rains are expected between Thursday night and Friday. However, the picture will change on Saturday with the arrival of a more intense frontal system, accompanied by strong winds and adverse coastal phenomena.
Balance of incidents
The storm recorded this Thursday left accumulations of between 20 and 30 liters per square meter in just twenty or thirty minutes. According to data from the Emergency Coordination Center 112, between 7.00 and 12.00 hours at least three incidents were recorded in Ibiza and one in Formentera. Among the most outstanding episodes are the temporary cut of the Ibiza airport road -already reopened to traffic- and the partial collapse of the roof of a health center in Palma, caused by the gusts of wind.
Next steps
Emergencies has confirmed that the Technical Advisory Committee will meet again tomorrow morning to reassess the situation and take appropriate measures in view of the forecast of a new episode of heavy rains. The meteorological monitoring will be continuous during the next hours, with special attention to the front that will affect all the Balearic Islands from Saturday.
