The shipping companies Baleària, Trasmed and GNV have positively assessed the institutional progress made during the last week in the Balearic Islands to address the challenges of mobility from a perspective of sustainability and territorial balance, with special attention to the impact that these policies have on the daily lives of residents and workers of the archipelago.
In this context, the three shipping companies have highlighted the Draft Opinion of the European Committee of the Regions on sustainable and resilient tourism, led by the President of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohens. The document stresses the need to place communities at the center of decision-making and to ensure that sustainability incorporates sustainable mobility and efficient and accessible connectivity for citizens.
The companies consider it essential that all stakeholders involved in the connectivity of the archipelago move forward in a coordinated and collaborative way to design effective solutions that respond to the reality of the island. In this line, they have also positively valued the motion approved in the Consell de Mallorca on the regulation of the influx of vehicles and the promotion of sustainable mobility policies, understanding that it proposes a framework that prioritizes the quality of life of residents and workers and guarantees their freedom of movement from a sustainable, proportionate and effective approach.
In view of this scenario, Baleària, Trasmed and GNV have formally expressed their willingness to collaborate with the institutions and have requested meetings for next January with the president of the Balearic Government and the presidents of the councils of Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca. The objective is to open a stable, rigorous and constructive work space that allows to integrate the operational reality of maritime transport in the design of effective solutions for mobility in the islands.
The shipping companies have also stressed the strategic role of regular maritime transport as a key element of connectivity, social cohesion and supply of the archipelago. Its contribution, they point out, goes beyond the tourist dimension, since it facilitates mobility for work and family reasons, the arrival of seasonal workers and the transport of essential supplies for the economic and social functioning of the Balearic Islands.
Finally, Baleària, Trasmed and GNV have reiterated their commitment to sustainable mobility that respects the island’s reality, based on institutional cooperation and applicable, proportionate and socially balanced solutions that preserve the connectivity of residents and workers and contribute to the shared objectives of sustainability and territorial cohesion.
