The Balearic and Canary Islands are the autonomous communities with the highest rate of marital dissolutions in Spain, with 41.9 lawsuits per 100,000 inhabitants, according to data published Monday by the Statistics Service of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), corresponding to the third quarter of 2025.

The quarterly evolution is also reflected in the rate per 100,000 inhabitants, which, although still the highest in the country, has dropped from 57.4 in the first quarter and 52.2 in the second quarter to the current 41.9.
In Spain as a whole, the total number of marriage dissolution proceedings filed during the third quarter of the year amounted to 16,444, representing a drop of 14.9% compared to the same period in 2024. Between July 1 and September 30, practically all types of proceedings, including annulments, fell, with the sole exception of consensual divorces, which maintained their stable trend.
When relating demands to the population as of January 1, 2025, the national average was 33.8 demands per 100,000 inhabitants. In addition to the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands, the Valencian Community ( 39.5), Murcia (37), Aragón (36.3), La Rioja (34.9), Asturias and Castilla-La Mancha (34.3), as well as Navarra ( 34.2) exceeded this average.
On the other hand, communities such as the Basque Country ( 26.2), Castilla y León (26.4), Cantabria (31.1), the Community of Madrid (31.5), Galicia (31.6), Extremadura (32.7) and Catalonia and Andalusia, both with 33.3 claims per 100,000 inhabitants, were below the average.
