The temporary care and reception modules for migrants in transit in Ibiza and Formentera are already fully operational, as confirmed Thursday by the Government Delegation in the Balearic Islands. Its implementation comes after several months without a definite opening date and coincides with a spike in arrivals: more than a hundred people have reached the coasts of Ibiza and Formentera in the last 48 hours.
From the Government Delegation they detail that the facilities located in the dock of Botafoc (Ibiza) and in the port of La Savina (Formentera) have already been used during the last days for the immediate attention of the people arrived in patera.
As for the module of the Port of Palma, the works are progressing at a good pace and it is expected to enter service in a couple of weeks. Until then, the Maritime Station remains open to offer an overnight stay to migrants who must wait for the ferry to the Peninsula after the police formalities.
17 interventions in two days, according to the government delegation
According to the data provided by the Government Delegation, in the last two days National Police, Civil Guard and Maritime Rescue have participated in 17 operations related to the irregular arrival of migrants, several of them rescues on the high seas. This device is reinforced by the aerial surveillance support of Frontex, which since February provides regular information to facilitate the location of vessels in waters near the archipelago, following a request made by the Ministry of Interior in November 2024.
The Delegation stresses that this international collaboration contributes to the priority objective of saving lives, especially in offshore operations.
Complex rescue in Cabrera
Among the most outstanding procedures, the Government Delegation points out the extensive operation deployed in Cabrera from Wednesday afternoon until early Thursday morning. It was to rescue a group that had landed on the islet L’Imperial, an area of difficult access and with adverse wind conditions.
The fifteen people were evacuated safe and sound thanks to a coordinated intervention of the Provincial Maritime Service of the Civil Guard, the USECIC, the Helicopter Unit (UHEL), the Mountain Group (GREIM) and Maritime Rescue.
