The Department of Cemeteries of the City Council of Ibiza is currently executing the restoration of the chapel number 29 in the first courtyard of the Old Cemetery of the city.
This project aims to give a dignified burial to human remains found in mass graves. The chapel, previously owned by a family who renounced to it, has been reformed thanks to the coordination between the City Council, the Department of Heritage, the Balearic Government and the Secretariat of Democratic Memory. “With this initiative we want to close wounds and honor the memory of those who did not have a dignified burial,” explained Manuel Jiménez, councilman responsible for Cemeteries in Ibiza. The remains will be delivered to their families after being identified, which will complete this act of historical reparation.

The reform, which has a joint investment of 40,000 euros, is funded by the areas of Cemeteries and Historical Heritage of the Consistory. According to the forecasts, the works will be completed in mid-January 2025, when the identified remains will be able to rest in this renovated space.
