Doctors in the Balearic Islands have raised their voices against the draft bill of the new Framework Statute Law, a text that, according to them, represents discrimination and a direct attack on their rights. Representatives of the Official College of Doctors of the Balearic Islands (COMIB), the Royal Academy of Medicine of the Balearic Islands (Ramib), the Academy of Medical and Health Sciences of the Balearic Islands, the Medical Union of the Balearic Islands (Simebal) and medical students have asked the Regional Minister of Health, Manuela García, for her support in this situation.
Setback in rights and increase in precariousness
As explained by the physicians in a statement, the public should be aware of the serious consequences that this Framework Statute will have on the healthcare system. The regulations promoted by the Ministry of Health make it difficult to reconcile work and family life, increase contractual precariousness and limit the collective bargaining power of physicians.
Another of the most controversial points is the professional reclassification proposed by the Ministry, which, according to the medical organizations, directly harms healthcare professionals. They have also criticized the restrictions on compatibility for Heads of Service and Section, as well as for assistant doctors in their first five years of work, which they consider an unjustified insult to the group.
Physicians call for political consensus
Faced with this scenario, the COMIB has announced that it will promote a consultation among the political groups of the Balearic Islands in order to raise awareness of the need to reach a consensus that guarantees real and sustainable improvements for doctors on the islands.
The physicians have warned that this Framework Statute, instead of strengthening the public health system, weakens it and puts the quality of care at risk. For this reason, they are calling for urgent modifications before the text is finally approved.
