The first day of the medical strike in the Balearic Islands, called on Tuesday against the proposed Framework Statute, left 72 operations suspended, according to data from IbSalut, which also reported thousands of cancelled appointments and tests in the main health centers of the archipelago.
In total, the health administration put the number of cancelled hospital consultations at 1,662, in addition to 207 radiological tests, 79 diagnostic tests and 2,849 primary care visits, an impact that IbSalut described as “significant” in the functioning of the system.
A “success
The Medical Union of the Balearic Islands (Simebal) highlighted the “success” of the follow-up during the first hour of the strike, which stood at 85% in the hospital area and between 65% and 70% in Primary Care, an assessment that the union considers a direct support to their claims. Simebal, as this newspaper recently published, keeps open the negotiation process with the Conselleria de Salut.
Some services were totally affected. Anesthesia was one of the departments with 100% follow-up, which forced the rescheduling of non-urgent interventions. According to the union, the adhesion of the medical intern residents (MIR) was “especially significant” because of their “remarkable commitment to the demands”, a point that they consider key to sustain the protest in the coming days.
