The Consell de Formentera has presented its allegations to the proposal to repeal Law 2/2018, of memory and democratic recognitions, putting the focus on the importance of the Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) of Es Campament.
Es Campament, a unique enclave in Spain
In its statement, the Consell emphasizes that Es Campament is the only real estate testimony of the former prison camp existing in Formentera and one of the few enclosures of these characteristics that are preserved throughout the country. For this reason, the institution insists on the need to ensure its comprehensive protection and promote its enhancement as a space of collective memory.
Risk to historic preservation
The allegations warn that the repeal of the Law of Democratic Memory could affect the recognition and protection of spaces such as Es Campament, essential to understand and preserve the recent past of the Balearic Islands.
The Consell also recalls that the declaration of Es Campament as a BIC historical site is supported by firm judicial decisions, after the High Court of Justice of the Balearic Islands dismissed the appeals filed against its cataloging.
