Formentera has given a lesson in solidarity by sending this Sunday two vans full of food and preparing a truck with a 12-meter platform that will leave for Valencia to help people affected by the recent storm DANA. What was originally intended to be a single van has turned into a larger operation thanks to the impressive response of the island’s inhabitants and businesses, who have far exceeded expectations for donations. The operation, coordinated by the Consell de Formentera, has had the support of Civil Protection and the Centre de Esports Náutics de Formentera, whose vehicles have been responsible for transporting the first loads of food. Llorenç Córdoba, president of the Consell, highlighted the extraordinary effort of the community: “The solidarity and response of the people of Formentera has been spectacular. Companies have donated entire pallets of food to help alleviate the situation of those who are having such a hard time in Comunidad Valenciana”. The mobilization of the island has been such that the parish hall of Sant Ferran, where the donations were concentrated, was crowded by the flood of food that continued to arrive over the weekend. This initiative has been driven by local groups such as Falla de Es Pujols, Reis Mags and Solidaris de Formentera, who have joined forces with the Consell and the staff of the institution to coordinate this great solidarity response.
More than donations
In addition to the donations, two technicians of the Consell de Formentera, the head of Sports Xavier Enguix and the coordinator of the area of lifeguards Marco Lague, have traveled as volunteers to the area. Their mission will be to take the food to the logistics center set up in Gandia and assist in the distribution if necessary. Otherwise, they will return to Formentera on the same day, once the donations have been delivered. The aid from Formentera will continue over the next few days. Cordoba has confirmed that between tomorrow Monday and Thursday a new collection will be organized, this time of clothing and materials, to continue providing support to those affected.
