The Local Police of Sant Antoni has dismantled in recent days four illegal settlements located in different parts of the municipality, in an operation coordinated with the municipal cleaning service UTE Portmany and the Department of Environment.

The intervention has allowed the removal of more than five tons of accumulated waste in areas of Sa Talaia, Es Molí and the Montecristo industrial estate, where improvised structures had been erected with tents, wooden pallets, mattresses and butane bottles.

A recurrent problem in natural areas of the municipality

One of the most significant settlements was located in Es Molí, where the agents discovered a wooden hut covered with a tarpaulin, equipped with gas cylinders connected to a camping gas. Given the evident risk of fire, the authorities proceeded to the immediate removal of the gas cylinders and the identification of the occupants, who assured that they would leave the place.

In Sa Talaia, two camps were located, one of them in a state of abandonment, which was dismantled during the XVI Jornada de Neteja a Sa Talaia with the collaboration of volunteers. In the other one, an occupant was identified, who collected his belongings and left voluntarily.

On the other hand, in the Montecristo industrial estate, the action was carried out after a warning from the neighbors’ association, alerting about the presence of a settlement in a wooded area of the Cas Corb avenue.

More control to avoid the proliferation of these settlements

The Sant Antoni City Council has pointed out that this type of operations are part of a strategy of continuous control and monitoring, with the aim of preventing the installation of new settlements and avoiding environmental and safety risks.

The authorities warn that the proliferation of these camps not only generates health and waste problems, but also poses a latent danger in areas prone to forest fires, especially in areas close to homes.

Local Police officers, in collaboration with the cleaning and environmental teams, will continue to carry out periodic inspections to identify and dismantle illegal settlements, thus reinforcing prevention measures throughout the municipality.
