A total of 14 provinces will be this Thursday with warnings for snow, waves and wind, according to the forecast of the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), which highlights significant accumulated snow in the mountains of the northern third, especially in the Cantabrian, northern Iberian and Pyrenees, as well as in lower surrounding areas.
Specifically, the provinces with yellow level warnings for snow will be Huesca, Zaragoza, Burgos, Palencia, Lleida, Navarra (Cantabrian slope, center and Pyrenees), Alava, La Rioja (Iberian) and Cantabria (Ebro). However, they will be raised to orange level (important) in other areas of Cantabria (Liébana, center and Villaverde valley), as well as in Asturias (mountain range and Picos de Europa) and León.
In addition, Menorca and Tarragona will activate yellow warning for waves, which will reach orange level in Girona. Meanwhile, Tarragona will have yellow warning for wind.
The AEMET has predicted for this Thursday persistent rainfall in the Cantabrian with possible locally heavy showers on the coast and inland mountain areas. Meanwhile, the Balearic Islands and northeastern Catalonia will have possible locally heavy rainfall.
Very strong gusts from the northwest are also expected in the mountains of the northern half, in the lower Ebro and in exposed areas of the Mediterranean and eastern Cantabrian coasts.
Thus, the entry of an air mass of arctic origin to the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands will leave cloudy or overcast skies and rainfall in the archipelago, in most of the northern third of the peninsula, Central and Iberian systems and surrounding areas of the northern plateau, with the possibility of being accompanied by thunderstorms and occasional hail.
The sky will remain cloudy in other areas, without ruling out occasional showers and a little cloudy weather in the southwest. However, the highest accumulations will occur in the Cantabrian Sea by persistent rainfall, without ruling out locally heavy on the coast, inland mountain areas, the north of the Balearic Islands and northeastern Catalonia. At the same time, morning fog banks are expected in the interior.
For its part, the snow will reach large areas of the northern third and mountain environments and surroundings of the center and southeast peninsular and Mallorca with significant accumulated in mountains of the northern third. In addition, AEMET expects the snow level to drop from (approximately) 1,000 meters to 500 meters.
In turn, in the Canary Islands there will be cloudy skies with a predominance of high cloudiness in the eastern islands and rainfall in the mountainous islands.
As for temperatures, they will continue in general decline in the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. However, there will be some increases in the minimum in northern depressions and in the maximum in northern depressions of Catalonia, and little change in the Canary Islands.
It is also expected that frosts will be weak in large areas of the interior of the peninsula, except in low areas of the southwest and the Ebro, moderate in the mountains of the northern half and locally strong in the Pyrenees.
Finally, the wind will be moderate in the Strait and Alboran and the trade wind in the Canary Islands, with north and northwest wind in the rest, but will be light in the interior of the southern half of the peninsula and moderate in the rest, with intervals of strong and likely very strong gusts in the mountains of the northern half, in the lower Ebro and in exposed areas of the Mediterranean coast and the eastern Cantabrian.
