The Balearic soccer world is mourning the loss of Evaristo Carrió Caballero, who passed away this Monday at the age of 88. With a career full of successes and challenges, Carrió left an indelible mark on the sport, especially in the clubs of the Balearic Islands, where his figure will be remembered as an example of dedication and leadership.
A life dedicated to soccer
Evaristo Carrió began his career on the bench with great determination, accumulating experience in teams of different categories. Among his milestones in the Balearic Islands, we can highlight his time with SD Ibiza in the 1975/76 season and his technical direction at Peña Deportiva during the 1993/94 season. However, his most memorable period was at Poblense, where he was in charge of the team between 1985 and 1988, in one of the most crucial periods of the club.
The historic achievement with Poblense
The 85/86 season was especially significant for Poblense, as the Second Division B faced a restructuring that unified the groups into one. This meant that teams had to finish in the top seven to stay in the category, a challenge that seemed unattainable for a club that was constantly struggling at the bottom of the table. Under Carrió’s management, and with key additions such as Mateo, Davó and Javier, the team achieved one of its greatest feats. On May 18, 1986, Poblense defeated Granada 2-1, securing their place in Segunda B in what was considered a historic moment for the club. Current Poblense president Miquel Molondro, who was a goalkeeper under Carrió, described him as “a passionate coach who always got the best out of every player”.
Acknowledgements and farewells
The news of his death has generated multiple messages of condolence. Among them, SD Ibiza’s communiqué stands out, where he is fondly remembered: “Our deepest condolences for the passing of Evaristo Carrió. Our thoughts are with his family and those closest to him. May he rest in peace.” Beyond his achievements in Balearic soccer, Carrió also left his mark in other national teams such as Elche, Levante, Compostela and Gimnàstic, consolidating himself as a benchmark in the dugouts of the bronze category of Spanish soccer.
