The family of Sol Yapura, an Argentinean woman who was run over and killed in Ibiza, awaits the start of the oral trial that will begin this Monday in the island’s courts. The process has as the only defendant the driver involved, who left the scene, and comes after more than two years of judicial instruction.
“The distance makes this process very difficult, but the human warmth of her friends gives us strength to believe that there is hope and that everything will work out for the best,” said her sister, Soledad Yapura, from Argentina. The woman also recalled that the young woman had a strong desire to be reunited with her son and that she was only two months away from fulfilling it. “She wanted to see him very much and, due to recklessness, she was left on the asphalt as if nothing had happened,” she said.
Sol Yapura was 34 years old, a native of Rosario and had been living in Ibiza for six years, where she had built a network of friendships that today accompanies her family in the claim for justice. Neither her mother nor her son will be able to travel for the start of the trial due to the high travel costs, although in 2024 they managed to be on the island to meet her close environment and say goodbye to her, scattering her ashes in the sea.
The incident occurred in the early morning of September 24, 2023, in the Ses Feixe area, when Sol was hit by a vehicle. She was rushed by the emergency services to the Policlínica Nuestra Señora del Rosario, where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit with extremely serious injuries.
According to medical reports, he presented severe cranioencephalic trauma with skull fracture, hemorrhage and cerebral edema, in addition to abdominal injuries and multiple vertebral, sacral and pelvic fractures. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he died due to the severity of his injuries.
After more than two years of investigation, the judicial proceedings have reached their decisive phase. The case includes the alleged crimes of gross negligence homicide with a motor vehicle, abandonment of the scene of the accident and omission of the duty to assist. Witnesses have already been confirmed, some of them coming from outside Ibiza.
The prosecution requests a bail of 682,025.71 euros, in addition to a sentence of five years in prison and five years disqualification from driving. Meanwhile, the family continues to face the process from a distance, accompanied by Sol’s friends in Ibiza, who have called on the public to be present at 9:20 am at the courts on the day of the trial.
“Sol was not alone,” repeat those who remember her. The public presence seeks to accompany the family on a key day and to support the demand for justice.
