The average household food expenditure in the Balearic Islands reaches 2,052 euros per person per year, which represents 14.8% more than the Spanish average, according to the report Food in Spain 2025 prepared by Mercasa. The document offers a detailed analysis of food consumption in each autonomous community based on data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
The report, which will be available from December 1 on the Mercasa website, places the Balearic Islands as one of the communities with the highest per capita expenditure on foods such as mineral water (112.3% more than the national average), wine (62.7%) or pastries and cookies (20.5%).
In contrast, milk is the only product with lower consumption compared to the rest of the country, with 10.9% less expenditure and 11.6% less consumption by volume.
Consumption by product: more soft drinks, less fish
Consumption data for the year 2024 show that each Balearic resident consumes 42.4 kilos of meat, 17.2 kilos of fish and 54.6 liters of milk, along with 122.3 liters of bottled water and 46.2 liters of soft drinks.

The business map and the hotel industry in figures
The Balearic Islands has 599 agri-food companies, more than 1,780 food and beverage stores, 723 supermarkets and 12 hypermarkets. There are also 1,055 street vendors and street markets, 3% of the national total.
In the hospitality sector, the community has 4,989 restaurants (6% of the national total) and 3,500 bars (2.1%), which reaffirms its leading role in the service sector.
