The Health Area of Ibiza and Formentera has improved its portfolio of services by incorporating Mohs surgery, a high-precision technique for the treatment of skin cancer. Thanks to this incorporation in the Dermatology and Anatomic Pathology services, up to thirty transfers to the Hospital Universitario Son Espases will be avoided each year.
This technique, intended especially for the removal of basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, allows tumors to be removed with greater control of the surgical margin and a very high cure rate. Its main advantage is that it preserves as much healthy tissue as possible, which contributes to better functional and esthetic results, in addition to significantly reducing the risk of recurrence.
The professionals of both services have completed the specific training to perform this intervention and have already successfully carried out the first real-time operation at the Can Misses Hospital.
The Pitiusas Health Area emphasizes that the incorporation of this surgery is a key advance for oncology patients on the Pitiusas Islands, who will be able to access specialized treatment without the need to travel off the island.
With this improvement, the public health system of Ibiza and Formentera takes a step forward in the care of skin cancer, one of the most frequent pathologies in areas with high sun exposure such as the Balearic Islands.
