The Ibiza Island Council has approved the extension until 2028 of the fire prevention agreement, a decision that rekindled controversy due to the lack of progress on two key commitments: the creation of the Ibiza Firefighters Consortium and the construction of the Santa Eulària and Sant Josep sub-parks, infrastructures considered essential to improve emergency response.
During the plenary session, the Councilor for Environmental Management, Nacho Andrés, acknowledged that the agreement signed in 2022 set the goal of developing a proposal for the Consortium in three years, but described that deadline as “too ambitious“. Even so, he assured that the preliminary draft of the Santa Eulària sub-park is “very advanced” and that the search for a suitable land in Sant Josep continues. Andrés defended that, although the deadlines have not been met, improvements have been made in infrastructure, vehicles and stabilization of the workforce, according to Radio Ibiza.
The conseller also said that the Consell has already asked the municipalities to designate the technicians responsible for working in the future Consortium of Firefighters, with the intention of submitting a proposal before the end of the legislature. This body is a historical claim that should integrate resources, improve inter-municipal coordination and optimize the response to fires and rescues.
