The Ibiza Town Hall has tried in the last hours to transmit tranquility to the families of the municipal school of Can Cantó, whose management is expected to be assumed by the Balearic Government from the 2026/2027 academic year. Mayor Rafael Triguero and the Councilor for Children, Sara Barbado, met on Monday with workers of the center, sent today an information circular to families and convened an urgent school board for tomorrow, Wednesday, December 17.
As reported by the Consistory, Monday’s meeting was convened to address “doubts” transferred by staff and some families. The circular distributed today through the communication application between the center and homes aims to clarify the scenario for the next courses, in a context marked by the political debate and the concern expressed by the educational community in recent days.
In this document, the City Council maintains that Can Canto and its extension will be ceded to the Govern so that the Conselleria de Educación assumes full management and sets the start of the new model in the 2026/2027 academic year. He also points out that the municipal staff currently working in Can Cantó will move to the Vila school “maintaining their conditions” and reinforcing the existing staff.
The circular also adds that during the 2025/2026 academic year the current conditions will be maintained and that the 2026 Summer School is guaranteed, while the City Council is committed to meet “with each family” to meet their needs in a personalized way for the 2026/2027 and 2027/2028 academic years.
The municipal text argues that the reorganization would allow the Vila school to offer service for the first time all 12 months of the year and refers to a new ratio that, according to the City Council, would facilitate “greater monitoring and attention” to “its 35 students”, as well as “greater stability” for families and educators.
“The City Council of Ibiza will continue to work together with the Government of the Balearic Islands to continue expanding the educational offer of 0-3 years in the capital of Ibiza,” the Consistory has told the educational community.
Concern in the educational community
The convocation of the school council comes after families of Can Cantó publicly expressed their “deep concern” about the transfer of management and demanded that any change not be implemented without dialogue and without written guarantees. In statements picked up by Radio Ibiza, the president of the school board, Francisco García, described a “constant” uncertainty due to “changes of scenery, rumors and lack of official information”.
In the same vein, families and educational staff have warned that in the 0 to 3 years stage the links with the educators are a key factor of emotional stability, and have expressed fear that the decree may result in staff changes, schedule adjustments or closures in August without having presented pedagogical reports to support the impact on the students.
Can Cantó currently has four classrooms and 55 places, although it has been under construction for two years, which has also caused unease among families. These works will include five new classrooms and an increase of 67 places.
The movement of the City Council also occurs mienteas the PSOE demanded explanations to the mayor for the decree that transfers the management of the school to the Govern.
It is worth remembering that beyond ceding the management, the City Council will continue to assume the conservation, maintenance and surveillance of the building. It will also continue to cover the costs of cleaning, repairs and supplies.
