Ilia Topuria is going through one of the most delicate moments of his personal and professional life: the Spanish-Georgian fighter, current mixed martial arts world champion, confirmed that he is immersed in a legal process after denouncing an alleged extortion attempt linked to his recent separation. The situation has had a direct impact on his sports career and has led him to postpone indefinitely the defense of his UFC belt.
Topuria himself was the one who decided to make the situation public through a statement on social networks, in which he explained the reasons that have kept him away from the competition since his last fight, held in June.
A media separation and accusations that escalated to the judicial sphere
The conflict follows the wrestler’s breakup with Giorgina Uzcátegui, a Venezuelan model and influencer with whom he has a daughter, barely a year and a half old. According to the champion’s account, in recent months he has been subjected to serious personal pressures, including threats related to the dissemination of accusations of mistreatment that, he claims, are false.
Topuria maintains that these alleged accusations would have been conditioned to economic demands. Faced with this situation, he decided not to give in and to go to court. In his statement, he emphasized that he has abundant evidentiary material (messages, audios, videos and testimonies) that he has already placed in the hands of Justice.
Allegations: extortion, threats and theft of goods
The fighter explained that the legal proceeding is not limited only to the extortion attempt. It also includes, as he detailed, facts related to the alleged theft of money and personal objects, in addition to repeated threats and the possible falsification of evidence.
Topuria remarked that all the documentation is being analyzed by his lawyers and presented to the competent authorities, with the objective of clarifying the facts and defending his name. In this sense, he insisted that the truth “only has one way” and that he has full confidence in the judicial process.
The impact on his sporting career and the decision to stop
The seriousness of the personal conflict has had direct consequences on the professional level: Topuria acknowledged that he has not been able to train normally or prepare for a fight at the level required for a world title defense. For that reason, he decided to temporarily quit competing, a decision he described as one of the most difficult of his career.
While the champion remains sidelined from the octagon, the UFC has opted to schedule a fight for the division’s interim title, pending Topuria’s ability to resolve his personal situation and return to the sport.

In his public statement, the wrestler explained that he kept silent for weeks to preserve the privacy of his children. However, he assured that there came a point where not speaking out meant allowing the false versions to continue to grow.

While the courts move forward with the case, Ilia Topuria is keeping a low profile and has announced that he will not make any more public statements so as not to interfere in the process or expose his family. His priority, he insists, is to resolve this conflict outside the sport and protect the welfare of his children, before thinking about his return to the highest competitive level.
