The Santa Eulària City Council and the Consell de Ibiza have joined forces to strengthen the fight against illegal tourist rentals in the municipality. The collaboration aims to apply harsher penalties and process cases more quickly, thus coordinating actions between the two administrations.
Collaboration to duplicate sanctions and expedite proceedings
From a cooperation protocol signed in July by the administrations of the island, the Consell and the municipalities of Ibiza have begun to share information and complaints to address the infringements of tourist rental without a license. This agreement establishes that the local police can work with new mechanisms to facilitate the detection and control of these cases, promoting the opening of effective sanctioning proceedings. In a recent meeting between the Councilor for the Fight against Intrusion, Mariano Juan, and the first deputy mayor of Santa Eulària, Miguel Rubio, it was agreed to exchange reports, totaling 35 files on possible violations of illegal tourist rental in the municipality. This crossing of data seeks, according to the institutions, to put the highest penalties and make them effective in less time.
High sanctions and control at local level
Santa Eulària has already initiated six sanctioning proceedings against owners who have used their properties for tourist rentals without the corresponding license, with penalties ranging from 113,000 to 350,000 euros. For its part, the Ibiza Town Hall has recently imposed two fines of more than 800,000 euros each for illegal rentals. Mariano Juan stresses that collaboration between municipalities and the Consell is “fundamental”, highlighting the proximity of the local police as an advantage to respond quickly to complaints and ensure a more efficient control in the field of tourist rentals. With this joint action plan, the island authorities seek a more effective strategy in the protection of the housing market and the regulation of tourism.
