The actress and presenter Elisa Mouliaá has formally denounced politician Íñigo Errejón, until now spokesperson for Sumar in Congress, at the police station, accusing him of sexual harassment. This complaint has triggered the immediate resignation of the politician from all his positions, marking the end of his institutional political career. The complaint was formalized before the Unit of Attention to the Family and Women (UFAM) of the National Police, shortly before midnight on Thursday. In her statement, Mouliaá recounted that the events took place in September 2021, in the context of a private party at the home of a friend of hers. According to the complaint, Errejón would have had a violent behavior and made non-consensual touching, which left the actress “paralyzed and without reaction”. In a message on the social network X, the actress publicly expressed: “I am a victim of sexual harassment by Íñigo Errejón and I want to denounce it”. Mouliaá assured that her intention in giving her name is to prevent complaints of this type from being dismissed as “anonymous and false”, seeking, in addition, to give visibility to other women who have suffered similar situations.
Resignation and farewell letter
Hours before the complaint was made public, Errejón had announced his resignation as spokesman for Sumar and member of Congress. In an open letter published on his social networks, he stated that he was leaving politics for having reached “the limit of the contradiction between the character and the person”. He also mentioned to be going through a process of psychological accompaniment for months. “This institutional stage is coming to an end. I hope that my departure contributes to the renewal that the democratic and popular forces need”, wrote the politician. From the environment of Sumar, sources quoted by Cadena Ser confirmed that the decision was taken after learning of Mouliaá’s public accusation, as well as other anonymous complaints about alleged sexist attitudes. The party leader, Yolanda Díaz, confirmed that Errejón’s resignation responds to the internal process initiated to clarify the facts. “Today he leaves all his positions as a result of that process,” Diaz said in an official statement.
Previous investigations and other allegations
Errejón’s case is not isolated. In recent weeks, journalist Cristina Fallarás shared on her Instagram profile an anonymous testimony describing a Madrid politician as a “psychological abuser”. Although at the time Errejón’s name was not mentioned, rumors on social networks pointed towards him, and more testimonies began to emerge. Faced with this wave of denunciations, Sumar decided to open an internal process to evaluate the situation, which finally culminated in the politician’s departure.
Impact and repercussions
Elisa Mouliaá’s formal complaint has generated wide media and political repercussions. The case has opened a debate on the behavior of public figures and the need to review power structures in the political arena. In addition, organizations supporting victims of gender-based violence have expressed their solidarity with Mouliaá and praised her courage in speaking her name publicly.
