The political controversy in Formentera continues to rise after the cancellation of the extraordinary plenary urgently convened by the president of the Consell Insular, Llorenç Córdoba, scheduled for November 6. The opposition parties, Sa Unió, Gent per Formentera and the PSOEvoted against holding the session as long as Cordoba does not include in the agenda the report of the Ethics and Good Governance Commission on the current institutional crisis on the island. The president has responded to these demands by assuring that he will convene the plenary “when appropriate”, without confirming whether he will meet the request of Gent per Formentera that the session be held before November 14. In statements to the media, Cordoba defended his position: “I have to prioritize tasks and make sure that the report is fully reviewed. If not, its validity could be questioned,” he argued.
Opposition demands immediate transparency
Cordoba’s position has generated even more discomfort in the opposition, which considers this delay as a maneuver to avoid the presentation of a report that could harm its management. Rafa Ramirez, PSOE councilor, has appealed to the Consell’s regulations to remind that the concluded files must be brought to the plenary in a timely manner. “This is an obvious attempt to not assume the responsibility that transparency implies with the citizens,” Ramirez said, while Jose Alcaraz, of Sa Unió, ironically called Cordoba “Don Erre que erre” for his refusal to expedite the process.
A session that does not arrive and a report in the air
Cordoba, however, has reiterated that the report is still under review and suggested that, if necessary, he will wait until all administrative steps are completely finalized. “There are sectors that are waiting for the report as a political tool and not to solve Formentera’s real problems,” he sentenced. With an increasingly polarized atmosphere, the situation remains uncertain, and the Consell remains on tenterhooks as Cordoba decides whether or not it will meet the deadline proposed by the opposition. The Formentera community is awaiting a plenary session that could shed light on the political tensions and administration on the island.
