Overnight stays in hotel establishments in the Balearic Islands fell by 1.1% in October compared to the same month last year, reaching 6.96 million, according to data published Friday by the National Statistics Institute (INE). Despite the decline, this is the second best record for a month of October in the entire historical series in the archipelago, confirming the strength of tourism demand in the final stretch of the season.
Fewer travelers, but still very high figures
Hotels on the Islands received a total of 1.29 million travelers in October, representing a year-on-year decline of 4.57%. The drop affected both domestic and international tourism, although with varying intensity.
Specifically, 143,232 travelers were residents of Spain ( 11.03% of the total), a figure that fell by 11.9% with respect to 2023. Foreign tourists reached 1.15 million ( 88.97% of the total), 3.6% less than in the same period of the previous year.
94% of overnight stays by foreign travelers
The trend is repeated in overnight stays:
-
Domestic travelers stayed 419,992 nights ( 6.03% of the total).
-
Foreigners accounted for 6.54 million overnight stays ( 93.97%).
This underlines the overwhelming weight of the international market in the month of October, especially in destinations such as Mallorca, Ibiza or Menorca, where the end of the season continues to depend mostly on European tourism.
The average hotel rate rises 7.8%.
The INE report also indicates that the average daily room rate in the Balearic Islands reached 118.4 euros, 7.8% more than in October last year. Hotel prices as a whole rose by 7.32%, maintaining the upward trend in the sector throughout 2023.
66.5% occupancy and 58,864 workers in the sector
In October, hotels in the Balearic Islands reached an occupancy rate of 66.51%, practically identical to that of Madrid (66.62%) and only behind the Canary Islands, which led the ranking with an occupancy rate of 76.2%.
The hotel sector employed 58,864 workers in the Islands, which represents an increase of 3.7% over last year and confirms the good health of the labor market linked to tourism.
Balearic Islands, leader in overnight stays in Spain
In the country as a whole, the Balearic Islands was the autonomous community with the highest relative weight in overnight stays in October, accounting for 20.32% of the national total, followed by the Canary Islands (18.66%) and Catalonia (15.8%). At the opposite extreme were Castilla-La Mancha (41.15% occupancy), Extremadura (43.11%) and Asturias (44.46%).
