The first vice-president of the Consell Insular de Ibiza, Mariano Juan, assured this Tuesday that no vulnerable person will lose the free bus fare, a measure that, he said, remains fully in force despite the criticism of the PSOE. Juan explained that since December 2 operates in the institution an internal instruction aimed at curbing fraudulent practices, to detect cases of tourists or holders of second homes who traveled for free thanks to an improper use of the system, a cost borne by all Ibizans.
A subsidy aimed only at residents
Juan stressed that the free public transport is designed for residents and regular users, not for visitors or people outside the legal requirements of the program. “The Consell can not endorse access outside the legality,” said the vice president, who stressed the “economic effort of all Ibizans” to support the measure. The free service will cost 9 million euros in 2025, of which the State has pledged to contribute 6, although -according to Juan- “not one euro has arrived yet”, while 3 million will be covered by the island’s budget.
PP accuses PSOE of “opportunism”.
The PP questioned that it is the PSOE who criticizes the internal instruction, recalling that the Socialists, in the Senate, did not support the universal free bus service. For the popular group, the current position of the PSOE responds to a “sterile attempt at political attrition” and evidence – according to its statement – that the socialists “aspire to continue for many years as an opposition group” in the Consell.
