The end of autumn and the beginning of winter will be conditioned in the Balearic Islands by unstable weather, with showers, rainfall and a progressive decrease in temperatures, according to the forecast of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). Winter will officially begin this Sunday, December 21, under a weather scenario marked by rain and cold.
This was explained by the delegate of the Aemet in the Balearic Islands, María José Guerrero, who said that this Friday are expected cloudy intervals that will tend to overcast skies throughout the archipelago, with rainfall that could be accompanied by mud. The rains will be more likely in Mallorca and the Pitiusas.
Temperatures will remain unchanged with respect to previous days, with maximum values between 17 and 19 degrees, still above the usual records for mid-December, when normal in the Balearic Islands is around 16 degrees.
The weather situation will be complicated for Saturday with the arrival of a disturbance that will leave overcast skies and widespread rain. The showers could be locally heavy and be accompanied by thunderstorms, which has led the Aemet to activate yellow warnings for risk of rain in the Serra de Tramuntana, north and northeast of Mallorca, the east of Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza and Formentera.
As for temperatures, they are expected to remain stable or register a slight decrease. The maximum will be between 15 and 17 degrees, while the minimum will range between 7 and 12 degrees, values in line with the usual average for this time of year in the archipelago.
On Sunday, coinciding with the change of season, the Aemet forecasts a temporary improvement of the weather during the central hours of the day. However, during the early morning some showers could be recorded, which could reappear at night and continue during Monday and Tuesday.
According to Guerrero, on Monday there could be precipitation in the form of hail and even snowfall on the peaks above 1,000 meters. On Tuesday the trough will continue, although the weather will tend to improve in the Pitiusas.
Temperatures will remain cool on Sunday, with highs between 15 and 17 degrees, but it will be from Monday when there will be a more pronounced decline. The thermometers will give way to a fully wintry atmosphere, with highs that will be between 12 and 15 degrees and minimums that could drop to 4 degrees in some parts of the archipelago.
