The City Council of Ibiza has carried out this Thursday preventive works of sewer cleaning and has activated a special plan of action before the yellow alert for rains decreed by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), which forecasts heavy rainfall for Saturday.
As reported by the Consistory, municipal teams intervened in particularly vulnerable areas, such as Es Pratet, where 30 liters per square meter were recorded in just half an hour. The actions are part of the urban drainage improvement plan initiated in October, with the aim of strengthening the capacity of rainwater drainage and reduce the risk of accumulations.
Reinforcement at ses Feixes and critical points
The City Council has highlighted that, as part of this device, the evacuation of one of the outflow channels of ses Feixes has been improved, a key point to avoid overflows in episodes of heavy rain.
He also recalled that the storm tank is not operating at 100% of its capacity, which limits the capacity to respond to heavy rainfall. In the case of Es Pratet, the rainwater and sewage networks are not yet separated, a factor that increases the pressure on the system in situations of high demand.
A system under pressure
These preventive measures come in a context of growing concern about the state of the island’ s sanitation infrastructure. As La Voz de Ibiza published this week, in just seven days four tons of waste were removed from the sewage system, mainly wipes, tampons and gauze, products that should not be flushed down the toilet.
The councilman for beautification, Jordi Grivé Cardona, warned that these materials form “mountains of fibers” that clog pipes, causing clogs and generating cleaning and maintenance costs of hundreds of thousands of euros a year.
