The preview of the UEFA Conference League match between Rayo Vallecano and Lech Poznań was marred by serious incidents on the streets of Madrid.
On the eve of the match, radical groups from both teams engaged in a violent confrontation that ended with injuries and arrests, causing alarm among neighbors and authorities: the incident has led to the reinforcement of the security arrangements for the match, already considered high-risk by the National Police.
Violent clash between fans in Madrid
The chaos began in the vicinity of a gas station near the Vallecas Stadium, where a large group of Rayo and Lech Poznań fans clashed shortly after dark.
Witnesses reported that the encounter seemed premeditated: about 300 ultras, almost equally divided between the two sides, threw stones, flares and blunt objects at each other, creating scenes of real panic.
The Police Intervention Unit (UIP) quickly intervened to disperse those involved, although the collision had consequences. One fan was seriously injured after receiving a blow to the head and was rushed to the Gregorio Marañón Hospital, where he remains under observation.
In turn, one of the fans linked to Rayo’s radical group was arrested when he tried to escape from the place. The images circulating on social networks show the level of violence and the magnitude of the confrontation.
Why did the incidents originate?
Authorities suspect that behind the conflict there is more than a simple soccer dispute. According to police sources, the clash may have been motivated by ideological differences between the ultras.
The Rayo Vallecano supporters, known as the Bukaneros, maintain an anti-fascist line, while part of the Lech Poznań supporters are associated with the Polish far right. This ideological tension, coupled with alcohol consumption and mutual provocation, would have been the trigger for the violent episode.
