The Balearic Islands once again led Spain in gender violence during the third quarter of 2025, by registering 2,365 complaints between July and September, equivalent to an average of 25.7 complaints per day, according to data released Friday by the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) through the Observatory against Domestic and Gender Violence. The community thus maintains the highest rate of victims in the country, with 35.9 per 10,000 women, 0.3 points more than in the same period last year and well above the state average, at 19.8.
More complaints and more victims than in 2024
The number of complaints grew by 3.3% year-on-year, from 2,289 in the third quarter of 2024 to 2,365 this year. At the same time, the number of victims rose to 2,221 women, 1.1% more than a year ago. Of this total, 1,179 were Spanish, a decrease of 4.5%, while 1,042 were foreigners, an increase of 8.3%. Women from third countries now represent 46.9% of the victims, seven percentage points more than in 2024, a trend that once again places the Balearic Islands as one of the communities with the greatest weight of foreign victims.
The report also reflects a notable drop in the number of underage victims, since only one complainant was a minor and of Spanish nationality, compared to the six reported in the same quarter last year, representing a decrease of 83.3%. Even so, the CGPJ stresses the need to maintain vigilance and prevention in the face of any signs of male violence involving minors.
Protection orders increase
The specialized courts initiated 535 protection orders, 22.7% more than in the third quarter of 2024. Of these, 406 were granted, an increase of 15.3%, while 129 were denied, an increase of 57.3%. For every 100 women victims, 24.1 protection measures were adopted, a figure that reflects the increase in judicial activity in this area.
There was also a significant increase in the number of women who did not wish to testify against their alleged aggressor. In total there were 383 victims, 45.6% more, which means that 17.2 out of every 100 women exercised this right recognized by law.
95% of the sentences were convictions
Between July and September, 322 convictions for gender violence were handed down in the Balearic Islands, 7% more than in the same period of the previous year, representing 95.3% of the total number of judicial decisions. Although in absolute terms they were few, acquittals increased by 77.8%, to 16 rulings, while 49 proceedings were freely dismissed (+250%) and 730 were provisionally archived, 13.8% less.
A total of 338 persons were prosecuted, an increase of 9%, of whom 95.3% were convicted. Among those convicted, 192 were Spaniards (16.4% more) and 130 were foreigners (4.4% less), with conviction rates practically identical, close to 95% in both cases.
The Juvenile Courts of the Balearic Islands prosecuted four minors for gender violence, a year-on-year increase of 300%. Three of them were Spanish and one was a foreigner, and all proceedings ended with the imposition of measures.
Situation in Spain as a whole
At the national level, the figures remained practically stable during the third quarter of 2025. Between July 1 and September 30, there were 49,156 female victims, up 0.8%, and 53,268 complaints, up 0.2%, which represents a daily average of 579 complaints throughout Spain, according to the CGPJ Observatory.
Seven out of ten complaints (72.2%) were filed directly by the victims, either in court or at the police station, while those filed by family members accounted for 1.92%. The rest came from direct police interventions (16.2%), injury reports (6.9%) and assistance services and third parties (2.5%).
The national rate stood at 19.8 victims per 10,000 women, practically the same as in 2024. Together with the Balearic Islands, the Valencian Community (25.3), the Canary Islands (24.4), Murcia (24.1), Cantabria (22.9), Madrid (21.5) and Andalusia (20.9) surpassed the national average, confirming that the archipelago continues to lead, by far, the indicators of gender violence in Spain.
