The PSOE has opened a new internal front after the resignation of Senator Javier Izquierdo to all his organic positions in the party. Although in the formation assure that there is no formal complaint registered for alleged sexual harassment, the socialist leadership has decided to act to clarify the information that has come to light in recent days and prevent the controversy from continuing to grow without an institutional response.
What happened with Javier Izquierdo and why he resigned from his positions
Javier Izquierdo, until now member of the Federal Executive Committee and socialist senator, presented on Thursday afternoon his voluntary resignation from all his responsibilities within the party. In the letter sent to the direction of the PSOE, he justified his decision in personal and professional reasons, assuring that he wanted to start a new working stage outside the organic sphere of the formation.
However, hours after this resignation was made known, information began to circulate pointing to a possible case of sexual harassment, which has placed his departure at the center of the political and media debate. Parliamentary sources indicate that, despite leaving his internal positions, Izquierdo has not yet formalized his resignation from his seat in the Senate.
What the PSOE said and what measures it took
From the socialist headquarters of Ferraz, the secretary of Organization of the PSOE, Rebeca Torró, appeared before the media to set the official position of the party. Torró made it clear that, so far, there is no internal complaint against Izquierdo in the channels provided by the formation and stressed that no formal communication has been received to prove irregular conduct.
However, he acknowledged that the explanation offered by the senator about his resignation could have been more precise, especially in view of the information published subsequently.
Details of the dossier opened by the PSOE
The main measure adopted by the party has been the opening of an ex officio informative file, a tool that allows to gather data and clarify the facts without the existence of a formal complaint. According to Torró, the objective of the procedure is to determine if there are sufficient elements to justify the adoption of more severe disciplinary measures.
In this context, the head of Organization made an explicit appeal to militants, party officials and members of the leadership to provide any information or evidence they may have, always through the established internal mechanisms.
The file will remain open while the possible indications are analyzed, in an attempt by the PSOE to show zero tolerance for inappropriate behavior and, at the same time, respect the presumption of innocence.
