NEW FACILITIES

Santa Eulària inaugurates the first municipal morgue in Ibiza after a 3.4 million investment

The new facility, located in Cas Llaurador, brings together for the first time on the island a funeral parlor, crematorium and cemetery in the same complex and offers discounted services for families with fewer resources.

Santa Eulària des Riu has inaugurated this Thursday, November 13, the first municipal morgue on the island of Ibiza, an infrastructure long claimed in the Pitiüses and designed to improve care for families in particularly sensitive times.

The new space, located in Cas Llaurador, next to the crematorium and the municipal cemetery, has involved a total investment of 3,421,969.25 euros.

Architectural details and layout of the new building

The project, signed by the firm Ribas & Ribas arquitectes, includes a building of 390.70 m² of usable area (477.57 m² constructed) that houses three wake rooms with a capacity for 25 people each. Two of these rooms can be joined together when a larger space is required, offering greater flexibility according to the needs of each family.

The mortuary also has a multi-faith room with capacity for 90 attendees, designed to accommodate ceremonies of different beliefs. A system of folding sliding windows allows to completely open its north facade and connect the interior with the exterior porch, expanding the capacity for celebrations with greater affluence.

The construction, at a cost of 1,955,289.63 euros, combines traditional techniques such as whitewashing and stone walls, both in the pavilions and in the surrounding urbanization.

Improved outdoor infrastructure and access

The intervention also includes the urbanization of more than 2,200 m² of paved and landscaped outdoor area, equipped with automatic irrigation. The parking lot has 50 spaces for cars, 10 for motorcycles and 2 spaces adapted for people with reduced mobility. The cost of this area amounts to 733,339.81 euros.

In addition, during the works, the installation of new medium and low voltage electricity supplies and the provision of drinking water for the entire Cas Llaurador municipal complex -cemetery, morgue, crematorium and municipal warehouse- was carried out for an amount of 327,632.60 euros.

At the opening ceremony, the mayoress of Santa Eulària des Riu, Carmen Ferrer, stressed the importance of this new infrastructure: “It is an essential infrastructure. This new space will allow us to provide a better response and offer a more dignified and closer service to families going through such difficult and sensitive times,” she said.

The official opening was also attended by the president of the Consell d’Eivissa, Vicent Marí, and the CEO of the VFV (Aurens) group, Josep Ventura.

Centralized services and financial support for vulnerable families

The start-up of the morgue allows to concentrate in the same area the services of wake, cremation and burial, simplifying the processing and improving the comprehensive care to families. In line with the principle of universality, the City Council will offer free funeral services or with discounts of up to 50% for people with financial difficulties, always after assessment by the municipal social services.

In addition, residents of Santa Eulària des Riu can benefit from a 30% discount on the cremation fee, as long as they can prove at least one year of residence in the municipality prior to the death.
