The National Police has provided details this morning on the arrest of the skipper of a the arrest of the skipper of a skiff that arrived at the island of Formentera and who confronted the Civil Guard. It is a subject of Algerian origin who is accused of a crime against the rights of foreign citizens and favoring illegal immigration. After an arduous investigation by the Aliens Unit, it was discovered that the migrants departed from the area of Boumerdes, Algeria, in a precarious boat of 5 meters in length, equipped with a 40 hp engine. The migrants had practically no room to move, with no water, food, life jackets and even no means of navigation, thus putting the lives of the people in grave danger. “The police investigations allowed to fully identify the skipper of the boat as responsible for the management, navigation and organization of the trip, culminating with the arrest of the skipper”, have reported from the National Police. The suspect tried by all means to disassociate himself from the trip , stating that he was a minor. After carrying out medical bone tests to determine age, these showed that the individual was of legal age, so he was placed at the disposal of the Court of Instruction in Ibiza, where he was remanded in custody.

Within the total number of immigrants arriving to the coasts of Ibiza and Formentera, 18 skippers of the boats have been arrested, for favoring immigration, and all of them have been placed at the disposal of the judiciary. From the UCRIF group of the Local Police Station of Ibiza, the investigations continue to investigate the existence of criminal groups that organize trips from the coasts of Algeria for citizens from more and more countries and regions of the African continent.
