The second year students of the medium grade cycle of Hairdressing and Hair Cosmetics of the IES Algarb, in Sant Josep de sa Talaia, offered this Tuesday a free hairdressing session to chronic patients admitted to the center Ca na Majora, dependent of the Hospital Can Misses. The activity is part of the program “Humanización por los pelos“, an initiative of the association Nunca Solos in collaboration with the Health Area of Ibiza and Formentera.
“The joy, laughter and the boost it brings to the patients and their families is the perfect ending to an afternoon where the students practice and the patients look beautiful,” says Mª del Carmen García, vice-president of Nunca Solos.
Fourth edition of a hospital humanization initiative
This day marks the fourth edition of the program that seeks to break the routine of hospital admission and strengthen the emotional well-being of patients. The session took place at Ca na Majora, the new Intermediate Care Center of Ibiza, where students from IES Algarb combed and cut the hair of six patients, including Mariano Tur Boned, 95, and Prudencia Hormigo, 67.
The activity combines practical training for the students with a clear emotional benefit for the patients, many of whom have been hospitalized for more than 20 days.
Personalized attention in a pioneering environment
Since its full opening last October 15, Ca na Majora has 29 single rooms for chronically ill patients. Currently, its occupancy rate reaches 72.4%. The center’s interdisciplinary team has grown to 56 professionals, including nurses, orderlies, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists and geriatricians, among others.
The objective of the center is to promote autonomy and community integration by providing specific and personalized care.
Never Alone: four years accompanying from the heart
The Nunca Solos association emerged in 2018, when staff at Can Misses Hospital detected the loneliness suffered by many elderly patients. Since then, it has been collaborating with the Health Area through an agreement that allows it to offer accompaniment and leisure workshops on several floors of the hospital.
In addition to sessions like this Tuesday’s, its volunteers organize board games, reading, crafts and movies for people admitted to Internal Medicine and Traumatology.
