The Consell Insular de Ibiza has awarded the company Islasfalto S.L. the road safety improvement works at the Forada intersection, located on the EI-500 road (kilometer point 5+000), for a total amount of 630,289 euros (VAT included).
According to the island institution, the work will begin after the Christmas holidays and will have a completion period of four months. This is the second time that the project has been put out to tender, after it was rejected in December 2024, which meant that prices had to be updated: the base budget has risen from 460,766.29 euros to 632,039.07 euros.
A historical neighborhood demand
The first vice president and councilor of Road Network, Mariano Juan, stressed that this action responds to a historical demand of the residents of Buscastell and Forada, who “had been years demanding improvements in a particularly dangerous point where there have been numerous accidents”.
“From the Consell we developed a comprehensive project to improve the safety of this section, because it is a population center where there is a school and it was necessary to act,” Juan stressed.
The Forada intersection is a traffic hotspot due to its proximity to the CEIP Buscastell, the Can Tixedó bar and the parking lot where the local produce market is held every Saturday. This confluence of uses has led to several requests from neighbors over the years to increase road safety in the area.
Improvements in accesses, lighting and pedestrian safety
The project includes the arrangement of the accesses to the parking lot, the improvement of the drainage and pavement, as well as the renovation of the sidewalks. Also contemplated is the creation of bus stops with bus shelters, the installation of street lighting at strategic points -especially in front of the school-, and the construction of new pedestrian crossings.
In addition, new horizontal signage will be implemented to reduce vehicle speeds and increase pedestrian safety.
The Consell prioritizes safety in school centers
Mariano Juan thanked the “great work” of the Road Network Department to promote projects that prioritize road safety in the most sensitive points of the island.
“Actions such as this respond to the demands of neighbors and schools, who were asking for more security,” he said.
The councilor recalled that the Consell continues to develop other similar projects, such as the pedestrian itinerary of Sant Francesc de s’Estany (Sant Josep) and improvements in Can Ramón and Can Nadal, all of them aimed at ensuring safer mobility in urban and school environments.
