The Consell Insular de Ibiza has approved the tender for the first comprehensive cleaning, conservation and maintenance service for the island’s road network, an unprecedented initiative that represents a structural change in the management of the island’s roads. The contract has an investment of 3.75 million euros and will have an initial duration of one year, with the possibility of extension for a second year.
The new service will allow to act in a planned and continuous way on all the roads owned by the island, covering about 200 kilometers of roads and about 100,000 square meters of landscaped areas. The objective is to improve road safety, reinforce fire prevention and organize the vegetation on the margins, as well as to guarantee a more adequate maintenance of traffic circles, medians and green spaces.
Until now, these tasks were carried out on an ad hoc or fragmented basis, through isolated actions. With this contract, the Consell ensures that for the first time a stable and professionalized model of road maintenance is established, which will allow a more efficient and homogeneous management of the island’s road network.
The tender is divided into three separate lots. The first includes the cleaning and clearing of roadside verges, with systematic actions throughout the year. The second one introduces as a novelty the forest cleaning, as well as the pruning and felling of trees in stretches with forest masses, by means of specific campaigns previously planned. The third lot focuses on the integral maintenance of landscaped areas, with pruning, irrigation, phytosanitary treatments and aesthetic improvement of the spaces.
The service will have specialized and dedicated human resources, with a minimum of 21 professionals distributed among the three lots, as well as specific machinery, adapted vehicles and signaling and safety systems. The contract specifications also establish demanding criteria in terms of occupational risk prevention, personnel training and the use of approved protective equipment.
