The Balearic Government hopes that the conflict between the Consell de Mallorca and the Consell de Ibiza over the transfer of waste will be resolved “in a relatively short time”.
This was expressed this Friday by the spokesman of the Executive, Antoni Costa, at the press conference after the Consell de Govern, in which he stressed that the solution must come from the island institutions themselves.
The Consell de Mallorca has expressed its opposition to receiving waste from the Pitiusas Islands for incineration in Son Reus, which has generated a disagreement with the Consell de Ibiza, which is looking for an alternative in view of the imminent saturation of the Ca na Putxa landfill.
An urgent problem for Ibiza
Costa has recognized that in Ibiza there is “a very serious problem” in waste management, since the landfill of Ca na Putxa has an “expiration date”, which forces to seek short-term solutions. In this sense, he considers “relatively normal” that the Consell de Ibiza tries to reach an agreement with Mallorca for the transfer of garbage to the incinerator of Son Reus.
However, Mallorca’s refusal has generated a conflict that still has no clear solution. The Government, for its part, has chosen not to intervene directly and has urged both institutions to find a negotiated solution.
Expectation of an agreement
In spite of the confrontation between both councils, the autonomic Executive trusts that the problem can be solved in a short period of time. “We hope that this conflict will be solved in a relatively short time,” said Costa, without specifying what alternatives exist if an agreement is not reached.
Meanwhile, the future of waste management in Ibiza remains an urgent issue, as the lack of space at Ca na Putxa makes it necessary to define a clear strategy to avoid environmental and health problems on the island.
