In an episode that once again highlights the migratory pressure on the Balearic coasts, the Guardia Civil and the Local Police of Formentera intercepted, in the last hours of Saturday, a skiff in the area of Can Marroig. In it were traveling 17 people of North African origin, all in apparent good health, as reported by the Government Delegation. The location took place at 22:45 hours, marking another point in a phenomenon that does not cease.
Figures that continue to grow
The statistics leave no doubt: so far in 2024, a total of 320 boats have reached the archipelago, carrying 5,321 people. This represents a significant increase compared to 2023, when 128 pateras and 2,278 immigrants were registered. The increase underlines the persistence of this route as one of the main entrances to the western Mediterranean.
The constant arrival of small boats
Formentera, due to its strategic location, continues to be one of the critical points of this phenomenon. The nighttime arrival of this latest patera is a reminder of the risk taken by those who venture out to sea in search of a better future. Although the authorities have highlighted the good state of health of the occupants, the conditions in which they usually travel are extremely precarious, increasing the vulnerability of these people.
