The Government and the City Council of Sant Josep have put into service a new antenna of the TetraIB network in the parish of Sant Jordi, as the first step of an ongoing plan that will progressively strengthen critical security and emergency communications in Ibiza.

The new station immediately improves coverage in Sant Jordi, Ibiza airport, Playa d’en Bossa and the coastline up to Punta d’es Jondal, areas of high residential density and high tourist pressure during the summer.

In a statement, the Vice President and Minister of Economy, Finance and Innovation, Antoni Costa, said that with this installation starts a phased deployment that will triple the TetraIB infrastructure in Ibiza, going from seven to 21 stations, with the aim of reaching 90% territorial coverage and placing the island at the level of the rest of the archipelago.

“It is a priority of the Government and it is already being implemented, since this effort is part of a Balearic investment of 13 million euros, co-financed by Feder, to modernize and grow the TetraIB network in all the islands,” he added.

The reinforcement of TetraIB in Ibiza is progressive and will be completed in phases. The objective is to increase the insular coverage and standardize it with the rest of the islands, prioritizing critical areas for the operation of Local Police, 112, health emergencies and firefighters.

The usefulness of having a public and priority network was evident in the great national blackout, as TetraIB was the only network that did not go down in the Balearic Islands and allowed emergency services to operate even when the commercial networks could not.

“TetraIB does not compete with private networks, it supports them when it is most needed. This antenna in Sant Jordi brings stability just where we had more operational challenges“, said the General Director of Emergencies, Pablo Gárriz.

In fact, the Local Police of Sant Josep had been demanding for years improvements in the coverage of its municipal area. The new station reinforces communications in airport environments, mass events, meteorological episodes and tourist incidents, and improves coordination with other bodies.

“It is great news for the agents and neighbors because Sant Jordi, the airport and Playa d’en Bossa gain quality and continuity in communications. It was a historical demand that today begins to be resolved,” said the first deputy mayor of Sant Josep de sa Talaia, Nieves Bonet.

What TetraIB is all about

TetraIB is the Govern’s professional network based on Tetra technology, designed for closed user groups such as police, firefighters, health emergencies, civil protection. Unlike the historical model -each administration with its own network-, the Govern is committed to a common network that facilitates coordination between the State, the autonomous community and the local world.

The agreement with the Federation of Local Entities of the Balearic Islands (Felib) allows Local Police and municipal services to adhere to TetraIB as a shared service, to reduce duplication, unifying tenders and optimizing technical staff.

“The objective is clear and is to create a large shared public network that increases coordination, saves costs and simplifies management for municipalities and councils. Summarizing in a single network is to gain in security and efficiency,” summarized the manager of the Balearic Agency for Digitalization, Cybersecurity and Telecommunications (IB Digital, operator of TetraIB), Miquel Cardona.
