The Sa Rota reservoir, in the municipality of Santa Eulària des Riu, is already working at full capacity after starting to pump water to sector B of the irrigation network about a month ago. With this, the system currently supplies the 88 hectares of social irrigation planned, consolidating itself as a key infrastructure for the agricultural use of reclaimed water in the municipality.
The Conselleria de Agricultura, Pesca y Medio Natural, together with the Comunidad de Regantes de Santa Eulària, organized an open day to explain the operation of the pond and the irrigation system to the members. During the visit, attendees were able to check the current state of the facilities, resolve technical questions about water quality and nutrient management, and learn about the performance of the system.
The general director of Agriculture, Livestock and Rural Development, Fernando Fernandez, stressed that “irrigation communities are the holders of the water right and must know the system to value it and ensure its optimal use”. He stressed that generating confidence and encouraging the involvement of the sector is “key to revitalizing agriculture in the municipality”.
For his part, the president of the Irrigation Community, Miquel Colomar, pointed out that the objective is to “give security to professional farmers”, in a context of increasingly frequent droughts. “We want to offer guarantees for the future, although we are still in a learning period,” he added.
The reservoir was filled at the end of April with more than 200,000 cubic meters of reclaimed water, and in May the test phase began in sector A, which is supplied by gravity. With the arrival of a stable electricity supply a month ago, water is also being pumped to sector B, allowing the entire system to operate continuously. The infrastructure has a regulation capacity of 208,000 cubic meters and a 12.6-kilometer irrigation network that supplies 34 active hydrants.
Future plans
With a view to the March 2026 irrigation campaign, the Government expects all hydrants to be fully operational. Among the priority crops are citrus fruits, nuts, olives, vineyards, vegetables and fodder, due to their fit in the territory.
In addition, the Conselleria is working on a specific Irrigation Plan for Santa Eulària and on a modernization project that will include the installation of a new filtration system, irrigation automation and remote control, a photovoltaic plant for energy self-consumption and an optimized distribution network.
