The Board of Directors of the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) has decided to stop publishing information on the social network X because“the loss of reputation of the network hinders the dissemination of institutional information,” it has announced in a statement. The decision will be effective from this Monday. Until now, the UIB had used as a general communication channel X (and Twitter before the name change) to disseminate, primarily institutional and research information, but the council considers that, in recent years,“X has ceased to be useful for the dissemination of information content and to maintain a healthy relationship with the community of followers.” They point out that the network’s loss of reputation makes it difficult to disseminate institutional information, “since the opacity of the algorithms penalizes the visibility of anything that is not polarization, disinformation and hate speech“. On the other hand, there are alternative networks to disseminate research and corporate activity. This decision affects both the institutional profile @UIBuniversitat and the accounts of the university services that have a presence in this network. The UIB hopes that it will serve “to open the way for the rest of the accounts” linked to the university. Currently, the UIB has institutional profiles on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Youtube, Telegram and, since a few weeks ago, in Bluesky, a network where the national and international scientific community has begun to have a prominent presence. It also informs the university news through the web www.uib.cat and the different institutional networks and channels.
