The General Union of Workers (UGT) of Formentera has publicly appreciated the recognition made by the island’s councilor of Social Welfare on the problems affecting the Residence for the Elderly of Es Brollsa gesture that the union considers essential after almost a year of constant complaints about the management of the center.
“This recognition is an essential step to be able to seriously and responsibly address the current situation of the center,” UGT has pointed out.
According to the union, the situation at Es Brolls is marked by the lack of qualified personnel on certain shifts and the urgent need to improve internal organization.
UGT has stressed that its priority is the users of the residence, elderly people who, it recalls, deserve dignified care focused on their needs.
Next, the organization stresses the importance of defending the rights and working conditions of the staff, as they are the ones who sustain the service on a day-to-day basis. Only after guaranteeing these two pillars -users and staff-, UGT argues, should the rest of the administrative and organizational issues be addressed.
“UGT wants to make it clear that our priority is the users of the residence, elderly people who deserve dignified care focused on their needs. Secondly, we defend the rights and working conditions of the staff, who are the ones who sustain the service on a daily basis. Only after guaranteeing these two pillars should the rest of the administrative and organizational issues be addressed,” they explained.
Concrete proposals to resolve the situation
UGT has expressed its willingness to collaborate with the Consell Insular de Formentera and the Govern Balear to implement measures to reverse the situation in Es Brolls.
The union puts on the table a series of specific and urgent proposals:
-
Strengthen the workforce and fill vacancies with suitable professional profiles.
-
Review care schedules and routines so that they are truly adapted to the rhythms and needs of the elderly.
-
Improving the working conditions of the staff, a key issue to reduce the overload that is currently causing numerous medical leaves.
-
Establish a transparent and participatory management model, with the involvement of families, staff and management team.
“Hand outstretched for dialogue”
UGT has reiterated that it has always been open to dialogue and has shown its willingness to participate in the Consell de Participació de la Residència, a body announced by the councilor herself, and which they consider a useful space to move forward in improving the service.
“UGT reiterates its commitment to the users and staff of the Residencia de Mayores and hopes that this recognition of the problems is the beginning of a stage of real and effective collaboration to ensure a quality service on the island,” the statement concludes.
